Note
The dream island of Levanzo
is distinguished by its high coastline and its
numerous grottoes, the most famous of which is
the Genovese,
discovered quite casually in 1949 and containing
rock engravings of anthropoid figures, of four-legged
beings, fish and idols dating back to the Neolithic
era, whilst other figures, representing oxen,
deer, horses and men date back to the Upper Paleolithic
period. Diggings have brought to light ceramic
artefacts and remains dating back to this last
period. There are also drawings representing men
intent on tuna fishing in the grotto, certainly
one of the most ancient activites practised in
this area.
The Faraglione
is characteristic of the area: it is a cone-shaped
islet linked to the island by an isthmus. Anyone
staying on this island must be passionately fond
of the sea, solitary walks like the one along
the road that divides the island from North to
South, connecting the village with the lighthouse
at Capo Rosso situated on a sheer cliff but offering
an incomparable panorama. Circumnavigation of
the island is a must if one is to fully appreciate
the beauty of the landscape and the numerous coves,
among them Cala Dogana,
Minnola and Tramontana. The sea, too, is rich
in sea life: in the stretch that separates Levanzo
from Favignana lives a rich field of Cymodocea
Nodosa seagrass and Caulerpa Prolifera seaweed,
whilst there are formations of the rare Black
Coral along the eastern coast.
